Engineering & Public Works
The Engineering and Public Works Department is responsible for the planning, design, construction, maintenance and operation of the Town's water distribution, sanitary sewer collection infrastructure, and street transportation network.  This infrastructure provides clean water to customers and provides for the efficient collection of wastewater. Clean water and the efficient collection of sanitary sewage is vital to the community, to maintain health and economic prosperity.

The department is divided in two divisions, Engineering and Public Works and is made up of the following positions.

  • 4 Foremen
  • 13 Operators assigned to maintenance of road, water and sewer systems

Areas of responsibility of the Engineering Division are:

  • Responsible for the development and evaluation of infrastructure development plans, water master Plan, responsible for special projects, review and implementation of operational and construction standards.
  • Oversee the planning and overall management of the storm sewer system, sanitary sewer system, roadway system, and water distribution system..
  • Administer the municipal capital works program for streets, water, and sewers; and general management of municipal projects.
  • Management of the Town’s operating contracts; patching, paving, garbage collection, and lane makings.
  • Conduct the pavement management program, and vehicle counting.
  • Coordinate approvals and inspection of subdivisions and extension of municipal services of new subdivision.
  • Provide guidelines and approvals on drainage of commercial properties.
  • Coordinate the planning of natural gas systems, along with the long term planning of other utilities.
  • Conduct underground infrastructure locates as requested.
  • Provide service inspections of new water and sewer connections
  • Management of the sanitary sewer inspection video library
  • Promote the backflow prevention program, and water meter maintenance and reading.
  • Planning of residential and commercial lateral services
  • Assistance to residents with repairs of service lateral blockages and video inspections.
  • Municipal mapping, and kilometrage review
  • Street light planning
  • Civic addressing

Areas of responsibility of the Public Works Division are:

  • Operation and maintenance of the water distribution system, which includes regularly operating valves, maintenance of fire hydrants, inspection of 1 pumping station, and 2 above ground reservoirs, conduct an annual water main flushing program, water quality control and water main break repairs,
  • Operation and maintenance of sanitary and storm sewer systems, sewer line flushing program, repair and maintenance of all sewer system components, clearing up of sewer system blockages and maintenance of 1 sewer pumping station,
  • Road and sidewalk maintenance, which include snow removal from roads and sidewalks, winter ice removal from roads and sidewalks, installation of new culverts and maintenance of existing ones, ditch and shoulder maintenance, street and sidewalk cleaning and sweeping, vegetation control along roads and sidewalks, dust control along streets, pavement repairs, curb, gutter and sidewalk repairs.
  • Signage and traffic, maintenance of all road signs, installation of new road signs and street name signs, maintenance of traffic lights and illuminated crosswalk signs.
  • Maintenance of town vehicles and heavy equipment, street sweeper/ vacuum truck, sewer flusher, wheeled excavator, loader/backhoe, front-end loaders with buckets and snow plows, municipal tractors with sweeper, plow, snow blower, mower, and grinder attachments, dump trucks with snow plows, 1-ton service trucks, and pick-up trucks.

Together, the Department is responsible for managing and maintaining:

  • 125 kilometres of streets
  • 27 kilometres of sidewalks
  • 130 kilometres of water mains
  • 700 fire hydrants and 800 valves
  • 100 kilometres of sanitary sewers and 1400 manholes
  • 81 kilometres of storm sewers and 1450 manholes
  • 6100 service laterals
  • 1 water pumping station and 2 above ground water storage tanks
  • 1 sewer pumping station
  • 9 sets of traffic signals
