Halloween

The Town of Riverview wants everyone to have a safe and fun Halloween. Motorists are reminded to use extra caution driving on October 31 as excited children may forget street safety. The Town encourages trick-or-treating before it gets too dark. A year-round curfew exists for children under sixteen (By-law 700-20). Youth are not allowed on streets after 10 p.m. without adult supervision.

Riverview trick-or-treaters, parents, and homeowners should consider these helpful safety tips when planning their Halloween celebrations.

  • Check that costumes are flame retardant so little ones are not in danger near burning jack-o-lanterns and other fire hazards.
  • Keep costumes short to prevent trips, falls, and other bumps in the night.
  • Try make-up instead of masks. Masks can be hot and uncomfortable and more importantly, they can obstruct a child's vision.
  • Make sure kids wear light colours or put reflective tape on their costumes.

Around the home

  • Leave front lights on so that trick-or-treaters have a well-lit path to your door.
  • Remove tripping hazards such as planters and decorations set on stairs.
  • Keep pets inside.
  • Avoid using candle-lit jack-o-lanterns; instead, place battery-powered tea lights inside pumpkins.
