Defining Progress

Each year the Town of Riverview goes through an exercise where we review all the development that has happened over the past year as well as highlight that which is planned or underway to measure our progress. This got me to thinking about the definition of progress.

Progress

[noun prog-res,  or, esp. British, proh-gres; verb pruh-gres]

Noun

1.    a movement toward a goal or to a further or higher stage:

2.    the development of an individual or society in a direction considered more beneficial than and superior to the previous level.

Verb

1.    Move forward or onward in space or time

2.    Develop towards an improved or more advanced condition:

Take any or all of the definitions above and consider the following;

Movement toward a goal or to a further or higher stage
The Town’s Strategic Plan helps guide decisions that will affect the livability, sustainability, and future of Riverview. Town Council adopted the Town of Riverview's 2016-2020 Strategic Plan with support from senior management in December 2016. Our mission is to provide strong leadership, good governance and quality municipal services that make for a vibrant, friendly and safe community for residents and business owners.

A Citizen Satisfaction Survey is an important voice for citizens. Every five years, the Town of Riverview conducts a community-wide survey to gather input before preparing its 5-year capital plan. Residents have the opportunity to provide input on the Town's performance, their satisfaction with civic services, and overall quality of life. The results of this survey are shared with Town departments allowing staff to improve its business and services with Riverview residents' participation and involvement. It is also used for performance measures in corporate business plans. The results from a previous Citizen Satisfaction Survey, conducted by Ipsos Reid, showed that 99 per cent of residents are satisfied with the quality of life in Riverview.

Move forward or onward in space or time
The Town's population continues to show strong growth. The latest census data showed a healthy 7.3% growth in population. Another important growth factor is that of the commercial tax base. This ratio improved to 12% of the overall base.

Develop towards an improved or more advanced condition
In 2014, a citizen-led committee was appointed by Mayor Ann Seamans with the mandate to research and consult with the community for the development of an Integrated Community Sustainability Plan (ICSP) for the Town of Riverview. The ICSP aims to reflect the shared aspirations of the community and further develop existing assets and resources to ensure a resilient and prosperous future for all. This plan remains a living document that guides our decisions and strategic planning efforts, as was the launching pad for our annual sustainability conference, Sustaina-Palooza
