Town Welcomes New Business Liaison

Please join us in welcoming Yat-Long Murphy as our new Community Engagement Worker! This position will be focused on engaging the local business community in the various sponsorship and partnership opportunities offered by the Town of Riverview. Yat-Long brings with her over a decade of experience in community and engagement initiatives for local businesses and non-for-profit organizations, and is looking forward to building relationships with existing business owners in order to help them thrive. We sat down with Yat-Long earlier this week:

Hi, I’m Yat-Long Murphy, Community Engagement Worker for local businesses in Riverview. Let me tell you a little about myself. I was born in Hong Kong, China and immigrated to Toronto, Ontario when I was 5 years old. Growing up, I dreamt about one day owning my own clothing line. Learning more about textiles and design progressed into an interest in retail, sales, marketing, economics, and business administration.

After graduating from York University, I moved to Moncton, New Brunswick in search of better work/life balance for my family. I found myself working at a business brokerage assisting people from all over New Brunswick in buying and selling businesses. I later pivoted to working in the gaming and entertainment industry until the pandemic hit. As luck would have it, I was given another opportunity to work with small business owners. This time around, I was helping people from all over the world.

I was never able to get a slice of the pie in the sky as a high fashion clothing designer, but I'm not emptyhanded. I have learned so much from working with local business owners of what it takes to make their dreams come true and watching them build that reality. Their enthusiasm and drive has always motivated me to do better.

In my new role, I will focus on engaging with local businesses through various sponsorship, partnership, and opportunities offered by the Town of Riverview. I'm also bringing understanding and empathy to the table. I know of and want to hear more about the challenges and difficulties facing local businesses today. I look forward to meeting you in the coming months. I'm also hoping to learn more about what issues are important to you, and how we can help.
