The Town of Riverview is planning improvements to the Gunningsville intersection at Hillsborough Road and Coverdale Road to improve the level of service and accommodate future growth in the town. The new wider intersection will require travellers to follow a different traffic pattern than they are used to. A public information session for this project was held on June 12, 2018.

Modifications to the intersection include adding a second southbound left-turn lane from Gunningsville Bridge, installing a second eastbound left-turn lane on Coverdale Road, adding a second northbound through lane on Gunningsville Boulevard and installing a second receiving lane on a portion of Gunningsville Bridge and Hillsborough Road. The existing right-turn lane from Hillsborough Road onto Gunningsville Bridge will be converted to a yield ramp.

More than 42,000 vehicles travel through the Gunningsville Boulevard intersection each day.

Construction schedule

July 3 to August 31, 6 p.m.to 7 a.m. every night (weather permitting)

Why change?

The current intersection experiences long delays and queues which approach—and in some cases exceed—their capacity. Staff added the project to the Town’s 10-year capital plan in 2015 and completed a review to reconfigure the intersection in 2016.

Why now?

There is a sense of urgency to complete the project to accommodate the planned causeway closure between June 2020 and November 2020 as the Province of New Brunswick completes its construction of the new Petitcodiac River Bridge. Currently approximately 27,000 vehicles travel the causeway each day and they are expected to find an alternate route when this crossing is temporarily closed.

Project Stats:

  • Five new lanes to add capacity to vehicle movement through intersection
  • Textured ground surface plates and audible signals to improve pedestrian accessibility.
  • Video camera lane detection, LED street lights and traffic lights
  • Extending multi-use trail on Gunningsville Boulevard to the intersection to improve bike lane connectivity.

Project Costs:

Riverview Town Council approved expenditures for this project at a total cost of $2 million. The Province of New Brunswick contributed $800,000.

Participants:

  • Town Project Manager: Michel Ouellet (P.Eng.)
  • Traffic Design / Construction Management: WSP
  • General Contractor: Dexter Construction
