From Scratch - Local Bake Shop Has Recipe For Lasting Success

After 35 years in business, Terry and Francine Cohoon, owners of Terry’s Bake Shop, have solidified their place as one of Riverview’s most treasured and long-lasting businesses.

Their secret ingredient? Respect.

“It’s easy to treat people with respect,” said the Cohoons. “A large part of our small success can be attributed to not only our products, but also our customer service. People get a personal connection and feel our appreciation for their support of our small business every time they make a purchase. That daily face-to-face interaction is what it’s all about.”

Decades later, with regular customers and delighted new patrons of their bake shop a plenty, the Cohoons recall humble beginnings.

“Our goal was to build a small family business and sell products at an affordable price to friends and neighbours in our beautiful town.”

Their perspective about why Riverview is a great place to start a business is deeply rooted in community.

“It’s a small town with people that care about their neighbours and prioritize supporting local,” they said. “In 2020, we were very worried about our survival. Come to find out, because of local love that poured in, we had our best year ever! That is what local support and love is all about – showing up for each other. We’ve raised our family here and we grew our business here, so it is everything.”

Family is at the heart of this local business, fueling their passion over the years.

“We draw inspiration from both of our parents. Whatever they did, they did it to the best of their ability and that will carry you a long way.”

Community support goes both ways for the Cohoons. When asked about a local business or organization to share the love with, there were many that came to mind.

“There are a lot of great options for this question, but we have to mention the Riverview Lions Club,” they explained. “They ignite community spirit in their fundraising efforts for town events, schools, and cultural groups - essentially whoever needs help. They have a wonderful group of local members who do all this work for our community. We love them all.”
