Riverview names chair of Wellness Centre Steering Committee

RIVERVIEW (N.B.) — The Town of Riverview made another important step this week toward the construction of its multi-use wellness centre by naming long-time resident and volunteer Lawrence Forbes chair of the Community Wellness Centre Steering Committee.

Well respected in Riverview and the surrounding area for his many years of community service, Forbes is a past president of the Greater Moncton Chamber of Commerce and Downtown Moncton Centreville Inc. He has also chaired fundraising campaigns for the United Way Greater Moncton and Southeastern New Brunswick, and he currently serves as president of the Riverview Arts Centre.

“We are so pleased to have Lawrence Forbes take on the role of chair with the Wellness Centre Steering Committee,” said Mayor Ann Seamans. “Lawrence has a deep passion for our community, and he brings a wealth of knowledge and experience in fundraising and setting direction for community-driven projects.”

The steering committee is a volunteer group composed of business and community members. In its advisory role, the committee will collaborate with the Town of Riverview to make the community wellness centre a reality. Committee members will play a leadership role in championing this project.

The community wellness centre is part of the Town of Riverview’s 10-year capital works plan. Council budgeted $250,000 in 2019 to support community-led fundraising, further development of the facility’s design requirements, and project management. Plans for the estimated $16-million wellness centre include a pool, walking track, community space and field house. Construction of the facility is proposed for 2022/2023.

“The community wellness centre is an exciting project for Riverview,” said Forbes. “The Town has a great reputation for its recreation programming and facilities, and a new wellness centre will enable Riverview to build on that reputation for many years to come.”

At its regular meeting on Jan. 14, 2019, council passed a motion to approve a Memorandum of Agreement between the Town of Riverview and the Community Wellness Centre Steering Committee.
