Riverview’s 2018 Junior Leaders volunteer over 3400 hours through summer enrichment program

RIVERVIEW (N.B.) – With summer coming to an end, the Town of Riverview wants to thank members of the Junior Leadership program for spending time giving back to our community over the summer months.

The program’s 20 youth volunteers logged 3400 volunteer hours, an average of 170 hours per Junior Leader. Thirteen-year-old Corey White accrued the most volunteer time over the summer with 232.5 hours.

Junior Leaders assist the Town’s summer staff who administer day camps, playground programs, and community events such as block parties, outdoor movies and Art in the Park. Older summer students act as mentors to the Junior Leaders modelling organization, initiative, creativity, and responsibility.

In addition to volunteer work with the Town, Junior Leaders also participated in community programs including the following:

Ronald McDonald Family Room: A small group of Junior Leaders planned a menu and went grocery shopping with funds raised earlier in the summer to cook a delicious meal for families using the Moncton Hospital’s Ronald McDonald Family Room.

SPCA: Junior Leaders gave affection and care to animals of all sizes at the Greater Moncton SPCA.

Tech Tuesdays: The group’s tech experts paired up with seniors at the Riverview Public Library to offer one-on-one instruction on how to use iPads, social media and other tech devices and programs.

“Youth selected for the Junior Leadership program share their time and skills with members of our community, offering a helping hand and brightening someone’s day, over their summer holidays. We thank the 2018 cohort for their volunteer service and wish them all well as they carve out their own paths in young leadership,” said Jill Greene, Community Recreation Worker.

Thank you to everyone who has been involved in this program. Applications for the 2019 Junior Leadership program will open on May 1, 2019.

The Town of Riverview's Junior Leadership Program is a volunteer experience for youth between the ages of 13 and 15 that runs from June until the end of August. It offers leadership experience to 20 Riverview youth every summer. For information about how to apply for the 2019 Junior Leadership program, visit www.townofriverview.ca/juniorleadership.
