Town of Riverview / SUNFEST Geocaching Challenge

Overview

We hope this fun geocaching activity will connect you and your family to Riverview's amazing outdoor green spaces during SUNFEST! As a bonus, if you complete the challenge, you have a chance to earn a limited edition Riverview SUNFEST 2023 Geocoin. This year's design is inspired by the Town of Riverview's 50 anniversary and a nod to the CANUSA Games, an international cultural, social and athletic exchange promoting the values of volunteerism, recreation and friendship with the municipality of Brewer, Maine. Riverview and Brewer alternated hosting the games for over 25 years from 1969 to 1994. The artwork features the opening of the CANUSA Games with a torch lighting ceremony that took place in Patricia McCrae Park in July 1969.

How do I get started?

  1. Grab your electronic device with cell service (and be sure to turn location services ON).

  2. Download the Geocaching app (available for iPhone and Android).

  3. Create a free account/profile.

  4. Open the app and search for SUNFEST geocaches or codes provided on the passport. You can then read the description, hint, and comments on the activity log.

  5. Once you have arrived in the general location of the geocache, click on the cache icon, followed by "navigate" to point you in the direction of the geocache. The cool thing about using GPS is that the location you are trying to find is shown on the screen and the metres will actually “count down” to tell you if you are moving in the right direction.

How do I get a SUNFEST Geocoin?

Complete the SUNFEST Geocaching passport. The caches will be LIVE on Friday, June 23. Note it is a third party unknown volunteer with geocaching.com who publishes the caches, so the time is unknown.

To pick up your trackable, you will need to show a Town of Riverview Staff or Community Volunteer that you have completed the challenge. You have the following options for pick up, first come, first served:

  • On Sunday, June 25,  1-3 p.m. community volunteers will host the initial opportunity to pick up your coin at the Riverfront Trail Gazebo. The code for this activity is GCA936N
  • If you miss the event, the coins will be available at the Parks and Recreation office, located at 55 Biggs Drive. Office hours are Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
  • If you are visiting from out of town, please leave a self addressed envelope with 2 stamps in the mailbox at 55 Biggs Drive with a note and email a screenshot of your information to recadmin@townofriverview.ca

Only 100 geocoins available, one geocoin per geocaching account.
