Embracing Responsibility Scholarship
Welcome to the Embracing Responsibility Scholarship dedicated to honoring Barb Hurlbut's exceptional contributions as the former Riverview Aquatic Center coordinator for over three decades. Established by the Town of Riverview, this scholarship aims to honor and support the commitment of lifeguards and swim instructors, recognizing the impact they have on and off the pool deck.
About the Scholarship:
The Embracing Responsibility Scholarship is an annual initiative that offers a $2,000 CDN scholarship to individuals engaged in lifeguarding or instructing at Pat Crossman Memorial Aquatic Center and/or Lion Ken Gabbey Outdoor Community Pool. It's designed to promote employment, improve retention, and acknowledge the significant contributions made by individuals in these roles. This scholarship is open to Grade 12 students and those pursuing post-secondary education, emphasizing the importance of experience and leadership.
Eligibility Criteria:
- Must be a Town of Riverview employee employed at the Pat Crossman Memorial Aquatic Centre and/or the Ken Gabbey Outdoor Community Pool.
- Open to Grade 12 students or those pursuing post-secondary education (Masters, Postdoctoral excluded).
- A Recipient must:
- Attend an Approved School on a full-time basis (as defined by the school);
- Be enrolled in a course of study leading to a first degree/diploma
- At the time of application, applicant must be on track to have worked a minimum of 400 hours of work (roughly 8 hours per week) by the time the scholarship is awarded.
- Applicants must submit an essay showcasing their responsibilities, impact, and leadership skills developed during their tenure.
- Applicants must submit a letter of reference from a senior official at your school (principal, guidance counselor, or teacher) with their contact information.
Application Process:
Applicants must submit an online form with their personal details, work experience, and the required essay and reference letter. All applications and supporting documents must be submitted online by 1 p.m. AST on Thursday, February 1, 2024.
How are recipients chosen?
The recipient of the Embracing Responsibility Scholarship will be announced in Spring 2024. All scholarship finalists will be evaluated and interviewed by a selection committee consisting of former and current Town of Riverview employees.
Key Dates:
- Apply online between January January 4, 2024 and February 1, 2024
- All applications and supporting documents must be submitted online by 1 p.m. AST, Thursday, February 1, 2024
- Finalists will be notified in March.
- Between March and April, finalists will undergo interviews by the selection committee.
- In April, applicants will be notified of their status.
- On April 16, 2024, the recipient will be recognized at the ‘Recognizing Riverview’ Award gala.
2024 Essay: Reflecting on Responsibilities, Impact, and Skills On and Off the Pool Deck
As part of the application process, candidates are asked to submit an essay up to 500 words that reflects on their personal journey as an employee at the Pat Crossman Memorial Aquatic Center, delving into the depths of their leadership experiences both within and beyond the pool deck.
Whether they’ve captained a team, coached, or contributed to community initiatives, this essay should highlight how their leadership journey has unfolded.
This essay is an opportunity to showcase the multidimensional aspects of candidates’ leadership prowess and how it extends far beyond the boundaries of the aquatic realm.
