Note for Note / Cut for Cut
The Dark Side of the Moon is Pink Floyd’s eighth studio album, released in March 1973. Conceived as a concept album, it explores themes of mental illness, time, greed, conflict, and death, partly inspired by the struggles of former member Syd Barrett. Recorded at EMI (Abbey Road) Studios in 1972–73, the album features innovative use of multitrack recording, tape loops, and synthesizers, with Alan Parsons as engineer and Clare Torry contributing vocals on “The Great Gig in the Sky.”
The iconic prism cover, designed by Storm Thorgerson, reflects both the album’s themes and Pink Floyd’s stage lighting. Promoted by the singles “Money” and “Us and Them,” the album received critical acclaim, achieved massive commercial success, and became one of the best-selling albums of all time—over 45 million copies worldwide. It remains on the Billboard charts for a record 991 weeks, and has been recognized by the Grammy Hall of Fame (1999) and the U.S. National Recording Registry (2012) for its cultural and historical significance.
