The Town of Riverview is seeking candidates for the summer student position of Community Garden Facilitator with the Department of Parks, Recreation & Community Relations from May 4th to August 28th, 2026.
The selected candidate will maintain all aspects of the Coverdale Community Garden, including its general programming.
Part I - Characteristic Duties / Responsibilities
- Daily maintenance to ensure that the garden is tidy and accessible to all gardeners, including but not limited to:
- Weeding and mulching communal spaces and walkways
- Ensuring water barrels are full and hose system is functional and accessible.
- Keeping tools in good working order.
- Keeping community garden shed tidy and organized.
- Keeping the greenhouse tidy and organized.
- Notifying supervisor if any tools or equipment needs to be repaired or replaced.
- Assist in Coverdale Centre event set up, tear down and general inventory tasks as needed.
- Cultivate, plant, care for, and harvest teaching plots for the Food Bank.
- Assist in planning and executing Community Garden and Sustainability Workshops.
- Provide friendly and helpful points of contact for Community Gardeners.
- Assist with sustainability outreach initiatives at various community events, such as Clean Up Day, Canada Day, and Block Parties.
- Provide detailed reports on the community garden initiative.
- Adhere to the policies, practices and procedures of the Town of Riverview.
- Always demonstrate and maintain a high standard of professional conduct.
- Establish and maintain a good relationship with garden members, the public, volunteers, and co-workers.
- Use problem solving skills but seek assistance when necessary.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Manager, Community Engagement.
Part II - Job Requirements:
- Currently enrolled in post-secondary education and enrolled in the fall.
- Proven leadership roles through work and / or volunteer experience.
- Experience using multimedia including Microsoft Office, Internet Explorer and social media.
- Knowledge of the Town of Riverview brand and an interest in gardening would be an asset.
- Excellent planning, organizational, and time management skills.
- Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills; ability to effectively work with the public.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills.
- Familiarity with Town of Riverview policies, procedures, rules and regulations, assets.
- Current Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Screening meeting Town’s expectations.
- Proof of Workplace First Aid and CPR/AED certification must be provided at least two weeks prior to the position start date.
This is a Full-Time summer student position with a rate of pay of $17.70 for 35 hours per week.
