The Town of Riverview is accepting applications for the position of Utility Worker III with the Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Relations.

Reporting to the Manager- Recreation Facilities and Assets, the primary purpose of this position is the operation and maintenance of ice-making and resurfacing equipment in the production and maintenance of arena ice; monitoring refrigeration equipment, including taking and recording readings and reporting issues; checking, adjusting and performing routine repairs and maintenance tasks on arena equipment; and ensuring ice quality is maintained. Related to these tasks is the performance of a variety of semi-skilled building maintenance and minor repair tasks, routine janitorial duties, security checks and ensuring users adhere to the facility’s Code of Conduct. During summer months and when the arena is not in operation, employees in this class perform maintenance of public grounds and operate lawn care and related equipment. They may perform lead hand assignments over a small crew of casual, junior and/or student employees.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of three (3) to five (5) years of general facilities and grounds maintenance experience, preferably obtained through work in a municipal Parks and Recreation facility environment.
  • Proficient in the use, operation and maintenance of arena equipment normally found in the Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Relations and operation of trucks, power tools, various types of mowers, and landscaping equipment.
  • Ability to safely perform physical tasks including moving objects up to 50 lbs, working at heights and all other tasks as outlined in the Utility Worker III Job Site Analysis as well as the safe and efficient use of hazardous substances, hand/power tools and powered mobile/heavy equipment.
  • Ability to work in a variety of indoor and outdoor environments and weather conditions.
  • Possession of a valid Province of New Brunswick driver’s licence, Class 5 with New Brunswick Driver’s Abstract, meeting Town’s expectations.
  • Criminal Record Check, meeting Town’s expectations.
  • Training and certification in municipal arena operations required or willingness to train.
  • Ability to read and understand MSDS, safe work and emergency procedures and other related documents and instructions.
  • Ability to independently troubleshoot and problem solve for a wide variety of duties in the occupational field.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with a desire to provide quality service to the public.
  • Excellent hand-eye coordination with the ability to distinguish colours and read measurements.
  • Attention to detail and aptitude to follow detailed work instructions and job procedures.
  • Ability to work shiftwork up to 10 hours/day and willingness to participate in on-call rotation, in accordance with the collective agreement.
  • Ability to function in team based work environment, ensuring the health and safety of all employees, visitors and members of the public.

DEFINITE ASSETS:

  • Training and experience in any skilled trade related to the work of Parks, Recreation and Community Relations.
  • Possession of a Red Seal in Carpentry or any other occupation related to the work of Parks, Recreation and Community Relations.
  • Training and certification in municipal swimming pool operations, turf grass management and playground safety.
  • High level of knowledge and expertise regarding arena ice making techniques, equipment and maintenance obtained through continuing training and experience.

This position is represented by CUPE Local 2162.  Wage is according to the collective agreement. During the period of winter operations, the hours of work for Utility Worker III are forty (40) hours per week, ten (10) hours a day, four (4) days a week. Shifts vary Sunday through Saturday between 6:00 a.m. and 1:00 a.m. and are awarded based on seniority. During summer operations, the hours of work for Utility Worker III are forty (40) hours per week, Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
