Job Summary:
The Town of Riverview is currently accepting applications for the position of Water Control Technologist for the Department of Engineering & Public Works.
Main responsibility will be to ensure the proper operation and maintenance of the municipal water distribution system and wastewater collection system, including all activities and facilities as per the conditions of the Certificates of approval to operate a drinking water distribution system and wastewater works – collection system.
Field work consists of water sampling, temporary piping, co-ordination of the temporary water during water related capital works projects, water main disinfection, new water main commissioning, pricing and coordinating the service requests process, service inspections, inspection and testing of all new water & sewer connections and addressing water quality complaints. Field work associated with the wastewater collection system consists of maintaining one sewerage lift station and conducting sufficient inspecting and evaluating the operation of our sewerage collection system.
Office work involves supporting the manager in the preparation of the annual water quality report, completing reports and forms required by department of health and environment, budget costing research, reporting any environmental emergencies, record keeping of all activities related to water and wastewater infrastructure. Regular communication with other departments and municipal staff, contractors, consultants, and the public will be an integral part of the position.
Education:
High School graduation
Successful completion of an approved technical course in the field related to municipal engineering that is accredited by the NB Society of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists.
Required Knowledge & Skills
Successful completion of an approved technical course in the field related to municipal engineering that is accredited by the NB Society of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists (NBSCETT);
Member of the NBSCETT in good standing;
Minimum of five (5) years relevant work experience as water operator or within the consulting or municipal field;
Demonstrated knowledge of Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint);
Must possess a valid New Brunswick Class 5 driver’s license with Driver’s Abstract meeting Town’s expectations;
Criminal Record Check, meeting Town’s expectations;
Excellent organizational skills and proven ability to split work between field and office, as required;
Excellent written and oral English communication skills and strong presentation skills;
Ability to understand and follow safe work policies as outlined by the Town of Riverview, the province of New Brunswick, and the water industry;
Flexibility to work non-traditional hours and/or extended hours, on-call requirement on a weekly rotation, when required;
Knowledge and understanding of water distribution systems including AWWA disinfection process, pumps & water storage tanks;
Candidate will be equired to pursue training and testing to acquire the Water Distribution II certification and Wastewater Collection I certification.
Characteristic Duties / Responsibilities
- Ensure the proper operation and maintenance of the municipal water distribution system and facilities as per the conditions of the Certificate of approval to operate a drinking water distribution system.
- Ensure the proper operation and maintenance of the municipal wastewater collection system and facilities as per the conditions of the Certificate of approval to operate a Wastewater Works – Collection System.
- Work includes record keeping all aspects of operating and maintenance of all activities and assists in the installation of new waterworks and wastewater works infrastructure and related equipment.
- The incumbent will conduct all matters related to the Town’s water meters, including quarterly water meter readings, water meter replacement program, and new meter installations.
- Oversee all matters related to Town water breaks, perform leak detection, action the Town’s cross connection program and installation of backflow prevention devices.
- Coordinate the Town’s yearly unidirectional water main flushing program.
- Work involves the application of technical skills and knowledge in the municipal water distribution system field including the maintenance of the Town’s water distribution system, inspection maintenance water storage facilities, inspection and maintenance of pumping units, chlorination equipment, chlorine residual and bacteria tests sampling, and transportation of water samples, etc.
- Work will include direct relationship and coordination with the engineering and public works sections of the department. Required to communicate effectively with other operators and supervisors, the public, industry associates and technical representatives.
- Oversee any water service leaks (locate curb stop, listen for leaks, and determine responsibility for repairs).
- Record keeping of the sewer flushing activity, flushing of dead-ends, inspection of overflows, and pump maintenance.
- Responsible to identify underground services (locates) as a service to the construction industry prior to any digging.
- Attend water operators’ meetings and tri-community water committee meetings.
- Oversee the temporary piping (planning, deliver notices, plumber for outside repairs, disinfecting and sampling).
- Work involves the overall monitoring (SCADA), operating and preventive maintenance of all water system pumping facilities, water storage facilities and other related facilities and equipment.
- Process requests for application for services, conduct chlorine residuals as per our program, conduct and complete the CCTV forms and sewer lateral requests, and test new service connections.
Shift, Hours of work:
Based on the CUPE Local 2162 collective agreement, Article 9.
Wage and salary:
This position is full-time permanent and is represented by CUPE Local 2162 with a rate of pay of $38.98 per hour.
