From Firehall to Flavourhall: The Chocolate River Station Welcomes Buddha Bear Café and Rocco’s Cucina

The Chocolate River Station has been a landmark in Riverview since the former fire station opened its doors as a retail space. With new partnerships between property owner, Robert Smith, Holy Whale owners Pete and Jeff Grandy, and Rocco’s Cucina owner Rocco Agostini, they are ready to say “Welcome Home” to Riverviewers as they open the doors on their latest additions to the public.

What to say about a café, takeout treats, and a romantic restaurant to add to the existing line-up of sought-after services and sips in the building? If you ask most residents — it’s exactly what they’ve been craving.

When visitors enter the Chocolate River Station they will now see a cozy barista counter, with comfortable seating and overhead lights that transport you to a European café. In addition to your favourite specialty coffees — all made with locally-roasted beans — the new Buddha Bear Café also offers a selection of paninis and treats made in Rocco’s kitchen. Holy Whale customers can use a QR code in the brewery to order their authentic Italian pizza and step out to the counter to pick up their order to bring back to their table. You can even peek into the kitchen to see the magic happen from the windows next to the café counter. Those looking for a more intimate dining experience will love the romantic Italian vibe of Rocco’s new restaurant location.

“The vision for this property has always been as a gathering place for people,” says Robert. “This is a hub for visitors to gather with friends to enjoy themselves and relax — the Holy Whale has always been able to provide great drinks and entertainment, and now there is great food too.”

The three components of their upcoming grand opening has Riverview abuzz in anticipation of having access to in-house dining, a café, and a takeout counter that is sure to be popular among Holy Whale customers.

“This is old-school, traditional Italian cooking,” shares Rocco. “The flavours remind me of home — we are keeping everything in-house that we can, from freshly made pasta and pizza dough to the flavourful sauces. We’re keeping the original menu items our customers have come to know and love — with a few surprises in store as well.”

It’s been an easy transition in many ways, as these gastronomic partners are aligned on their vision to bring people together using simple ingredients and quality products — all at a great value.

“Hundreds of people have come through already to check things out and inquire on our opening,” comments Pete. “People love to stay here, to support local, and that enthusiasm has really kept us motivated the last few months. We want to thank everyone for supporting local and being excited about this next step with us.”

That is what Robert calls “the Riverview difference” — the people here are invested in their community and are overwhelmingly supportive.

“We want to give the people of Riverview that spot that they’re looking for,” comments Robert. “We’ve made investments in the patio to capitalize on this fabulous outdoor space and will continue to grow the Chocolate River Station as a welcoming community hub.”

The Buddha Bear Café is now open daily, with pizza being served Wednesday through Sunday during Holy Whale hours. Rocco’s Cucina’s dining room is opening Wednesday, June 11, and keep an eye out for a Chocolate River Station Grand Re-Opening celebration.

“I am so thankful to my customers, especially those in Hillsborough who helped me get started,” says Rocco. “I can’t wait to welcome them to our new location in beautiful Riverview!”
