Riverview’s New Creative Corner: Introducing Maker Hub
There is a vibrant new community space in Riverview where creativity, innovation, and hands-on learning come to life.
Founded by local artist Elise Boudreau and her spouse Josh McLean, Maker Hub is a much-needed makerspace — as seen in cities like Vancouver and Ottawa — where people of all ages and craftiness can explore their creativity. From sewing, sculpting, and 3D printing, to embroidery, painting, and clay work, this communal workshop is a space where all are welcome to work on their creative pursuit or try something new.
“The landlord reached out to me when I did a call out looking for a space for this business,” says Elise. “We walked in and right away knew it was perfect. My vision is for visitors to let go of the paralyzing fear of imperfection and just express themselves. It is so important to put the expectations you have for yourself aside and tap into your creativity.”
When you walk into Maker Hub you will be inspired by the clean and creative aesthetic of the room. The former library of the Gunningsville School is now a welcoming space displaying local art for purchase, with an array of projects available to get you started, and shelves of art supplies and tools at your fingertips. Visitors can enjoy free tea and coffee while using the space, and there are snacks available for purchase. The Hub is built on a mission to encourage creativity and break down barriers.
“Maker Hub is about accessibility of the arts,” says Elise. “You don’t need to be perfect. Everyone starts somewhere — it’s about expression, not perfection.”
The Hub is also filling a gap for young families in Riverview to find activities for their children. Through the Commercial Market Threshold Study conducted in 2023 by economist David Campbell, many young families in Riverview find themselves heading outside of town for children’s activities. Now, these families can explore a creative space or attend a workshop as a family.
Visitors pay a day pass fee to use the space, which includes access to many tools and equipment. You can book the machine you want to use ahead of time to ensure it’s available when you arrive.
“We have high-end tools such as a Cricut, sewing machines, and several 3D printers,” says Elise. “Tutorial videos will be available to help users, and someone will always be here eager to assist you with your project.”
