Why Seed Saving Matters - and How Riverview Is Leading by Example

Community gardens and seed libraries play a growing role across Canada in strengthening food security, protecting biodiversity, and bringing people together. From the Prince Edward Island Seed Alliance, which has collected seeds from more than 1,000 plant varieties to East Vancouver, communities nationwide are recognizing the power of seeds.

Here in Riverview, sustainability is more than just a goal — it’s something we try to keep in mind in the way we plan and make decisions. Through thoughtful policies, everyday practices, and community programs, we’re working to support the long-term health of both our community and the environment.

One standout example of this commitment is Riverview’s Seed Library.

Canada’s Largest Community Seed Library

With more than 470 varieties of vegetables, herbs, and ornamental plants, the seed library offers something for everyone.

The library is for everyone – whether you’re a seasoned gardener or planting your first seed. It is meant to be a free community resource is about preserving heritage seeds, supporting biodiversity, and improving food security by making seeds accessible to everyone,” said Alicia Clarkson, Community Engagement Worker and Community Food Mentor, who led the creation of Riverview’s seed library.

How the Seed Library Works

  • Choose as many varieties as you like, but please take only what you can grow this year
  • Grow your garden and save some seeds

A Community Effort
Tucked into a meeting room at the Coverdale Community Centre, home to Riverview’s Community Garden, the seed library is a true labour of love. Meticulously organized by Clarkson, the space features thousands of seed packets, clearly catalogued with descriptions and growing details.

This is a passion project that I undertook in the fall,” says Clarkson. “It was hundreds of hours of sorting, categorizing, and organizing, but for a seed nerd like me, it was one of my 2025 highlights. I had help from colleagues, and the outcome is truly great.

Clarkson also received support from local businesses, whose generous seed donations provided the foundation for the wide variety of seeds now available at the library.

The result is a permanent, welcoming feature at the Coverdale Community Centre. One that reflects Riverview’s commitment to sustainability, community connection, and growing a healthier future, one seed at a time.

Check out the Seed Library today and during Maple Fest 2026, join us at the Coverdale Centre for Riverview’s first ever Seedy Saturday!

This nationally recognized community seed swap and gardening event will feature local vendors, free seeds, and a chance to connect with fellow garden enthusiasts.
